Summary

I’ve bought loads of music gear and had no idea how to use them. The same thing happens with business tech. People copy what others have and then realise it’s all shit because they don’t know their own workflow. Figure out your arc first, from acquisition to invoice, then pick the tools. Don’t waste two years learning like I did.

Back in the early 90s, I used to work in music stores and studios and so on, installing music equipment. But I loved the technology. I loved the samplers and the synthesisers. And at that time, it was starting to get into the computer side of things. And I loved all of that.

So because I was making a lot of money, I was buying everything. The problem was, I had all. the gear but I had no idea how to kind of put it together, I obviously learned it and I became pretty good at it, but at the beginning I knew absolutely nothing, we all get there, we get all of this stuff, all this tech, but we just have no idea how to use it, we’ve all been there, as I said.

And with running a business it’s kind of the same, it seems like everyone gets all the technology, everything, because someone else has it. But we realise, actually, it’s all shit because our business isn’t going anywhere. It’s because you don’t know how to use it. You don’t know how to get by and do the systems and do the SOPs and stuff like that. I get it. I’ve been there with the music stuff.

But the way to do it is not look at what someone else is doing, really. The way to do it is to figure out what your workflow is, how you work, how you work with your clients. I mainly deal with coaches and consultants because that’s who I am, so I know where I’m coming from, I know what the pain points are. So I can give them you advice as to how to do it.

But the way to do it is to make sure you know what the arc is, everything from advertising effectively, acquisition, etc., all the way down to sending the invoice. Once you have that arc, once you have that process, then you can choose the right tools that you want.

Otherwise, you’re just buying a bunch of tools like I did back then, wasting probably a couple of years to try to learn it. And it’s annoying as hell. And if you’re running a business, you’re wearing so many different hats. You don’t have time to do this. You need to pay for your rent. You need to pay for foods. You need to, you need money. And to do, and for you to take two years to do that is just annoying as house.

Don’t look at how other people work. Figure out your arc, then get the tools that will help you.
