Basecamp is the modern day Rolodex

I used to run a business in the past with a minimal amount of ‘tech’. And when I say ‘tech’ I mean Rolodex, pen and paper! So for me having a tool like Basecamp is equivalent to that, but quicker, simpler and easier.

Summary

It’s not about the tool or the price, it’s about how you get your work done. You don’t need a bunch of software, just the right tools, and Basecamp is a great foundation for your business. But you still need other tools around it, and you need to know your workflow before you can create a strategy.

Raw

Yesterday I made a video about Basecamp and how they were changing their pricing model. And many people were replying to me via emails and saying, well, they prefer the old model because it’s one price for everything. Now, I do half agree with that.

The point isn’t the tool or the price or anything. The point is how you get your work done. You don’t need a bunch of software to run your business. But having the right tools and the tool set within that tool will enable you to do a lot more work and be more impactful.

Back in the day, for instance, back in the 80s when I was running a business, literally Post-it notes and Rolodexes. I made a video in the past about this. So you don’t need technology per se, but Post-it notes and Rolodexes were effectively the technology at the time.

It’s so funny hearing it, talking about it, saying it. It’s so weird. That was a technology at the time and people were running businesses with it. I was working in a bank never had a computer. I was working in an estate agent a letting’s agent in the UK didn’t have computers. We were literally doing stuff off cards.

Now again you can run your business that way but the whole point of technology, the whole point of the right technology, and that’s a point of Tech Minimalism, is to use the right technology to get the most out, not to use every tool under the sun or even every feature under the sun within that tool.

Now, going back to Basecamp, Basecamp, I see it as a foundation to any business. It’s your intranet. It’s your communication. It’s your project management tool if you want to use it that way. It’s a CRM. Many people do use it as a CRM. Not ideal, but it can be done, and I’ve done it in the past, as I said yesterday.

It’s got to-do lists. It’s got lots of features, and there are new features coming out all the time with it, which is amazing, six week cycles and all that.

So having the right tool to run your business is different to having the tools that you need to do your work. Does that make sense? And I’ve said this before.

So Basecamp being the foundation of your business, you can still use other tools around that with that, not just Basecamp and that’s it. Because this just doesn’t work. I use a CRM. I could do it in Basecamp making these videos. I can’t do it in Basecamp, so I need other tools to do it.

So, again, Basecamp is and should be known as the, yeah, a blank piece of paper, which I said yesterday because you can do anything with it, but the foundation of your business, because it can do so much more than you think it can.

And you just need to create the right text strategy to be able to use those tools. And once you know your workflow, then you can create the strategy. There’s no point creating a strategy if you have no idea what you’re doing.

Right.

Anyway, have a great day. If you have any questions, let me know. There’ll be comment section below. And I’ll see you in the next video. Ciao. Thank you.
