Summary

Starting something creative is hard, and I spent months wondering why anyone would listen to another tech guy. Then I realised being creative means being selfish: it’s your ideas, your branding, and you should do it for yourself. Don’t wait for perfect equipment, just start with what you have, be yourself, and people will resonate. This video took about 35 minutes, and that’s the way I do things.

It’s really hard to start something new, especially if you’re trying to be creative, i.e. make videos, do podcasts, etc. It’s really difficult. I had questions before I started. It took me months to figure out to actually how I should do these videos.

But the nagging question for me was, why would someone else listen to another tech guy? Because there are a million or one people out there. And I played with that. It played on my mind, basically, and I was thinking about it constantly.

Then it kind of struck me in a sense that being a creative, you kind of have to be selfish. It’s your ideas. It’s not anybody else’s ideas. It’s your thoughts, your way of doing things, your branding and so on. And you have to be selfish when you come to do that.

The reason I’m talking about this is because I have clients who I work with their tech and stuff, and they ask me about my videos because they want to create videos. So I kind of help them out with the tech and stuff. But generally, they don’t need all of this stuff, right? They don’t need a mic. They don’t need a massive camera and stuff. You can actually do it with an iPhone and then gradually grow into, okay, I want a better camera and a different mic.

But the first thing that they say is the tech. The second thing that they say is, well, I don’t know what to talk about. And that’s not something I generally can help with, but I would just say, talk about the things that you know, talk about the ideas that you have about your business. But be selfish because you’re a creative and you shouldn’t be dictated to as to what you’re creating.

I mean, if you go to a painter and say, I want a painting of my dog, whatever it is, you wouldn’t say to them, how to do it, right? It’s the creative output from that person, which is a personal thing, which is a selfish thing. So being selfish and being creative kind of are one, effectively, when it comes to creating anything, especially with videos and stuff.

I make videos because I enjoy making videos. I hate writing. I can do it, but I don’t like it as much as me making videos. And it really doesn’t take as long as people think, it does, especially if you’ve got a system going and workflows and stuff.

So from the idea of this video, which generally turns out from a tile to me posting it and you watching it, well, not watching it, but me posting it, is roughly about 35 minutes. Now, that’s not too long, and it’s evergreen. People, it’s on your website, it’s on YouTube, whatever it is. People will constantly see it if you have good titles, which I know I don’t. But that’s a personal thing.

Again, I’m being creative. I’m being selfish in my creativity in the sense that even my titles aren’t fantastic. And I know about that. Everyone keeps talking about it. But that’s the way I do things. And that’s the way you should do things when it comes to creating anything, especially when it comes to video.

Be selfish. Do it for yourself. Don’t do it with the thought of, oh, my God, I’m going to make loads of money. Oh my god loads of people are going to watch it. No! Do it for yourself and if people resonate with it which generally will happen.

I mean think about it people sell bathwater for goodness sake and there are thousands of people buying it and watching that stuff. People make videos about eating and like who’s watching this stuff but millions of people do. So it doesn’t matter what it is be selfish and be creative and just be you be yourself hopefully that has helped on a Friday.
