Summary

I love email, but people use it wrong by getting too many marketing emails and writing novels. Keep emails concise, one or two sentences, and unsubscribe from anything that doesn’t bring value. If it’s for a project, use Basecamp or a project management tool. Keep a separate email for marketing if you must, but mainly just stop wasting time.

So those who know me know that I like email. I like all aspects of email. Receiving email, sending email. As a protocol, I love using email if I’m not working with you. If I’m working with you, then it’s in Basecamp or a project management tool that you’re using. That’s what it should be used for. But email is a great communication tool.

I don’t think email should be, I’m not here to read a novel in my email. If I send emails out, they’re very concise. There’s no more than one paragraph usually. And if it’s one sentence, even better. We’re not here to waste time on reading a bunch of text in an email because we need to get on with our work. And I don’t want to waste my time reading something that makes no sense.

So if it’s to do with the project, it’s in the project management tool. And if it’s external, i.e. not. with a team. Obviously, I don’t work with a team, but if it’s not with a team, and it’s external, it should be an email, and I love email.

The problem with email is that not many people know how to use it. And what I mean, they have too many emails. They get way too many emails. They work emails, obviously personal family emails, marketing emails. I’m going to come back to that, spam emails and so on. So in all, there’s, there’s, there’s, there’s, there’s, There’s a bunch of different types of emails.

Now, I read something on LinkedIn. Someone was saying, well, if you’re getting too many marketing emails, what you should do is have a separate email for your marketing. Now, great idea, and I do recommend that to people. The problem is we shouldn’t you be getting that many marketing emails. If an email is coming to you and it’s not serving any value, you should unsubscribe straight away.

I probably get like a handful and a half emails that are kind of marketing, stuff that I’m thinking about buying. So I’m going to stay on that list just in case. And then once I’ve bought it, once I’ve dealt with it, I unsubscribe. So I don’t subscribe to that many emails. The emails that I do subscribe to help me grow, help me understand, help me learn.

But you can’t learn everything all the time. You can’t have all the emails coming in because you’re not going to get any freaking work done. You’re not helping your clients, for instance. You’re not spending the time you should on yourself, your dog, your family, and your clients. If you’re reading a bunch of emails all the time, or not necessarily reading them, but wasting time trying to organise them even. Like, you know, oh, I’ve got to go into this other inbox where all my marketing is to have a look through. People that don’t have time for that nowadays, right? Because there’s so much that we need to do, especially when you work for yourself, you’re wearing different kind of hats. You need to run your business, talk to your clients, etc, etc.

So when you get a marketing email from today, sorry, I had to clear my throat, understand what it’s there for. Is it something I’m buying? Is it something I’m learning? Does it bring any value? If it’s none of those things, unsubscribe. Just stop wasting time on paragraphs and paragraphs and reams of emails.

If someone sends me a massive email, I will skim through it and read it. Obviously, I have to, because if it’s urgent, you need to read what’s going on. But I will basically reply with a one sentence, summarising effectively what’s being said and with my reply. So it’s literally one, possibly two sentences. So they kind of understand what’s going on because it’s kind of pointless reading a bunch of stuff in an email that doesn’t bring value at all because people love talking like I do in these videos but people don’t listen so they love to write but when they get it back they’re not interested in another paragraph coming out they’re interested in what’s your feedback give me that one line and that’s basically what I do.

So look at go through your email check out if it’s not bringing value if you’re not buying anything it’s just pointless wasting your time just unsubscribe straight away but do keep a separate email for or your marketing because then it doesn’t mess around with your main inbox effectively.

Anyway, as always, keep it simple. If you have any questions, let me know below. In fact, let’s have a chat. See you next one. Ciao.
