I saw a poll asking how people track information, many said Post-It notes, which drove me nuts! You need one place for everything, a single source of truth. Not bits of paper or multiple apps. Keeping stuff digitally in one system is the only sane way to run a business.

There are some weird things you find on the internet. Anything from flat earth to whatever else, tinfoil wearing hat stuff.

Actually, I found something today that I posted on my Twitter. But I found something on LinkedIn that bothered me and it annoyed me. I’m not going to put a link to it or anything. But basically there was a poll that was asking about how people tracked information, notes and stuff.

And most people wrote down, they put it in their calendar. Okay, that makes sense. Many put down Post-It notes.

That was the thing that annoyed me, not the other thing, the Post-It note thing that annoyed me. Because you should have one place to put everything. If you have a bunch of Post-It notes everywhere, how are you keeping track of it? If you’re out of the office, do you take a picture of the wall or the space where all your Post-It notes are? And hopefully you can find it in that tiny little screen that you have on your phone. It’s a stupid idea.

But many did put that down. And I’ve seen it before in the past as well with some of my clients. When we change them over to actually doing things properly, they’re happy with it. But using Post-It notes is the worst idea. Ever.

If you’re taking a simple note that you need for that moment, that’s a different thing. But if you’re trying to track information, it’s idiotic. It just is.

So again, having everything in one place is great, but Post-It notes isn’t that one place. You should have, I’ve said this before, single source of truth where you can go to that one place and actually have access to everything, whether it’s client information, project details, all your tasks, your calendar, your email, the emails that you’re dealing with your clients and projects. I mean, just everything, your opportunities, your leads.

Obviously, there are different apps that do that kind of stuff. But choosing an app, choosing a system where everything is in one place is way better than having bits of paper, information, different notes, all over the place.

Now, I have been speaking about Post-It notes, which is an analogue thing, but many do the same thing with their computer. They have two task managers and three calendars and, oh, it’s just a complete mess.

It just annoys me because this is what I do, right? If you go to a garage with your bad car, they get annoyed with you. So it’s the same thing with me, with technology. I just find it fascinating how people can say I will use Post-It notes to keep track of stuff long term. It’s crazy to me. It makes no sense.

So having everything in one place, I think digitally, especially if you’re running a business, you have to have it digitally, especially if you’re working with a team. You can’t have Post-It notes everywhere.
