It’s time to let go of things

I’m guilty of hoarding tech ‘stuff’. Whether it’s old equipment, parts, or things I think I might use later, and it’s really become a problem, but I’m about to fix it.

Summary

I spent the weekend clearing out old tech and I’ve realised I’m a hoarder, not a minimalist. I’m trying to let go by taking photos of things I don’t need, like a podcast guy suggested. The same applies to clients, they have too many apps and we need to work together to get rid of the stuff they don’t use. Have a look around your system and keep it simple.

This weekend, I basically went over my office and over the things that were piling up that I had to get rid of. It’s not anything that I needed to keep for clients or anything. It’s just old stuff from my old way of work at what I was doing in the past. Because now, obviously, I’m coaching, consulting, advising. I don’t do hardware repairs anymore.

So I had to go through everything and here, that’s what this stuff is. That’s what that stuff is. I had to basically try to get rid of it.

The problem with me is that even though I’m into simplicity, not minimalism, even though I’m into simplicity and making things simpler and not have too much stuff, which is part of minimalism, is that, is that, that I hate to throw things away. You could call me a hoarder of tech, of things that I’ve had in the past, parts, basically any kind of tech.

I think I still have my original iPhone in the box. I think I still have a couple of iPhones. I have a Newton iPad. I would never use it. Why have I got it? I have my first ever original digital, it’s a Casio, digital file effects, basically. It was one of those early days things. I still have it. And I can’t bring myself to throw them away. And I’m trying to learn to let go of things.

So one thing I learned off a podcast, it was years ago. They were talking about minimalism and how he was able to, to let go of things by taking a photograph of everything that he wanted to throw away and keeping the photograph and making a book out of the stuff that he kind of cherished, that he was given as presents, but he just didn’t want to keep it because he wanted to have a simple lifestyle.

So what he did was take photographs of these things, put them in a book, and he left the coffee, left the book on the coffee tables, when people came to his house, they would look and wonder why their bowl, cup, whatever the present that they gave them was in this book. And when he explained what he was trying to do, it actually meant a lot more to them because he had that idea of cherishing forever inside this photo book.

And I’ve started doing that. Very slowly, I’ve started doing that and hoarding things like this stuff that I really don’t need. Obviously, I’m not going to take photographs of it, but I’ve come to a realisation that I’ve got too much stuff, way more than you think I have. I am a simplest, I would say. I am someone who likes to do stuff simply, but I’ve collected a lot of tech stuff that I just need to get rid of, and obviously that’s what those boxes are.

Have a look around your house. Have a look around, yeah, your tech. Because the same thing happens when I’m working with clients. They have so many apps. Half the time they say, just get rid of stuff that you don’t think I’m going to use. Well, that’s difficult because I don’t know how you work. You have to go through it. So we work together and get rid of all the tech and the software that they have. So have a look at your system and see what you can get rid of.

Anyway, hopefully that helps. Make sure you subscribe below. If you want to have a chat, there is actually another link below. And I’ll see you in the next one. Keep it simple. Ciao. Bye.
