Summary

I keep seeing posts about successful entrepreneurs waking up at 4 a.m. and hustling, and it’s such bullshit. A guy called Marcus once told me to enjoy my time while I’m young, and it blew my mind. That’s why Tech Minimalism is about saving time, because you only have one life and you should be enjoying it, not chasing money.

You know, one thing I keep seeing on social media is entrepreneurs’ life, what they do. Successful entrepreneurs, what they do and what you should do. It’s such bullshit.

Wake up at 4 a.m. 4 a.m. What kind of life do you have? You know, go to the gym, eat breakfast. Okay, these are things that you should be doing. But waking up at 4 a.m., what kind of life do you really have? It’s mind-blowing.

And it got me thinking about one of the jobs that I had. I was working freelance at a TV station. And the guy who hired me, who was the freelancer, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, he told me once. So the job was overnight. The job was week on week off, so seven on seven off. And at the time I was earning so much money. It was crazy for the time. I was making so much money. I was like, oh, I’d love to work some more, maybe get that third week for the month, and then I could save a lot of money and I can buy this and buy that, etc.

So I asked him, Marcus, could I please have another week? And he calmly basically said no. He sat me down, kind of, and said, the reason why I want you to work week on, on week off, you’re earning more than enough money. The reason why I want you to work week on week off is because I want you to enjoy your time while you’re young. It blew my mind.

And ever since then, I’ve always thought about it. I always keep that on the back of my mind as to whenever I do something, whether I say yes to a project, no to a project, whether I do anything, whether it’s business or personal, I always think about time more than anything else.

That’s the whole point of Tech Minimalism and simplicity and what I, what I preach, what I talk about, is that you should do things that alleviate the amount of time you work because you don’t have any more time than you’re given. You could, effectively get run over tomorrow. Hopefully you won’t. I won’t. But something could happen and then you’ve lost all that, all those things that you could have been doing because you’re chasing the wrong things.

So people waking up at 4 a.m. 5 a.m. Oh man, it drives me insane because of what Marcus said. Enjoy your time. Don’t worry about what other things people are doing or what other things you think you might want or need, go and enjoy your life.

And it boggles my mind when I see all these Twitter posts, LinkedIn posts specifically on LinkedIn, but posts in general about, you know, high profile entrepreneurs wake up at X and do Y and et cetera, et cetera. And it drives me insane.

And I always go back to what Marcus said. You have one life and I want you to enjoy it, you shouldn’t be chasing the money. And you know what? He was right. Here I am, however many years later, I still think about it.

And it makes me weep sometimes when I see posts where people are just hustling all the time and getting, they might get things done, but you’re losing out in what you should. should be doing, which is enjoying your life, the things around you.
